Enable Veteran Team Gives a Day of Their Time

Enable’s Veteran Employment Service Team, part of Veteran Charity Walking with the Wounded, recently attended Give a Day of Your Time (GADOYT) at The National Memorial Arboretum. The team worked alongside Interserve to undertake tasks to benefit the Arboretum and its grounds.

The National Memorial Arboretum honours the fallen, recognises service and sacrifice and fosters pride in our country. It is a spiritually uplifting place and is emerging as a world-renowned centre for remembrance.

There are nearly 300 memorials for the armed forces, civilian organisations and voluntary bodies that have played a part in serving the country; and even HMS Amethyst’s cat. Several corporate war memorials from British banks, building societies, and insurance companies have been relocated to the grounds when the original owners became unable or unwilling to care for them. At the heart of the Arboretum is the Armed Forces Memorial, which is a tribute to over 16,000 service personnel who have lost their lives in conflict or as a result of terrorism since the end of the Second World War.

Enable Employment Officer, Chris Carlisle attended the event along with both Shropshire and South Staffordshire clients; Jeff, Nigel, Roger and Paul. The group spent the day cutting down trees in an effort to maintain the grounds for visitors. By the end of the day, Enable staff, clients and Interserve managed to complete the equivalent of one week’s work in six hours. GADOYT provided approximately 400 man-hours to the Arboretum during the five day project.

A massive contribution and certainly made a difference.
